Before the first drop of perfume escapes the bottle, Riyam al Mamari has already told a story on its surface.
For the Omani artist, a perfume bottle is never just glass. It is a canvas waiting to bloom with delicate flowers, drifting butterflies and intricate brushstrokes that transform a familiar luxury object into a one-of-a-kind work of art. In recent months, videos of her hand-painting perfume bottles, particularly those from Oman’s internationally celebrated fragrance house Amouage, have captivated thousands online, turning an intimate creative process into a viral celebration of craftsmanship, beauty and national pride.
Yet the journey began long before social media discovered her work.
“My passion for drawing started in childhood”, Riyam says. “It was my way of spending time and expressing my thoughts and emotions”.
What began as a childhood pastime gradually evolved into a lifelong pursuit. Through years of practice, studying different artistic styles and experimenting with new techniques, art became woven into the fabric of her everyday life.
That spirit of experimentation remains at the heart of her work. Rather than limiting herself to paper or canvas, Riyam paints on pottery, sketchbooks, glass and almost any surface that invites imagination. Each material, she believes, speaks its own language.
“I don’t believe creativity belongs to one material”, she explains. “Every surface has its own character and challenges; and that keeps the experience exciting while helping me grow as an artist”.
Among all those surfaces, perfume bottles presented an especially intriguing challenge. The idea itself was inspired by Omani, Arab and international artists, but Riyam was determined to leave her own unmistakable signature.
Her compositions are often filled with blossoms and butterflies, symbols she associates with beauty, gentleness, renewal and nature. Every bottle becomes a carefully balanced composition, blending her artistic vision with clients’ preferences to ensure no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
Painting on curved glass demands extraordinary patience. Every brushstroke must account for reflection, transparency and precision, qualities that have reshaped not only her technique but also her philosophy of creativity.
“The experience taught me the importance of patience and attention to the smallest details”, she says. “It also strengthened my belief that art can exist in everything around us”.
The unexpected popularity of her videos has become another turning point. While she never anticipated the widespread attention, the enthusiastic response has expanded her audience, boosted her confidence and opened doors to new collaborations.
Like many emerging Omani artists, Riyam acknowledges that standing out in an increasingly vibrant creative landscape requires constant growth. But she also sees unprecedented opportunities as Oman embraces the arts and digital platforms connect local talent with audiences far beyond its borders.
Her ambition now reaches beyond individual commissions. She hopes to exhibit locally and internationally, develop collections with a distinctive artistic identity and collaborate with brands that value craftsmanship.
For Riyam al Mamari, even a perfume bottle can become more than a vessel for fragrance. In the hands of an artist, it becomes a keepsake where Oman’s artistry lingers long after the scent has faded.
